Delaware Health Equity Coalition is a not-for-profit, section 501 (c)(3) corporation.

Our Services:

Primary Adult and Pediatric Care

Offering comprehensive and preventative primary health care services to the medically underserved communities of Wilmington, Delaware, meeting the needs of each individual patient. We will provide care for all, insured and uninsured.

Behavioral/Mental Health

With a team of mental health practitioners and clinical social workers, we will strive to work with you to establish and meet your behavioral health goals, as well as treatment recommendations promoting better mental and behavioral health.

Specialty Healthcare

Our office will offer a variety of specialty care services, such as ENT and Allergy, Pulmonology, and Women’s health specialty. Proximity to a pharmacy and nutritional services will also be provided.

Dental Care

Good dental health translates to good overall health. Our goal is the prevention of its negative effects on your heart, diabetes and chronic inflammation, just to name a few. We will provide access to appropriate dental care as needed.

Social Care Services

Services to assist the overall social well-being of each patient, provided with counselors and/or case managers, to connect patients to the community resources and network, and meet the diverse needs of those we serve.

Lab Testing Services

As a patient-driven medical facility, we strive to provide better and more effective care. The use of point-of-care testing for routine laboratory tests allows for results to be an integral part of every medical decision.

Medication Management

Pharmacists will be available to meet with you privately for one-on-one discussions in person, over the phone, or virtually to help you with your medications, any concerns, and to help you identify harmful medicine combinations. We provide you with the tools to decrease your overall medication costs.

Telehealth Services

With the use of a smartphone, iPad or camera-enabled computer, you will be able to have a virtual visit with your healthcare provider when necessary. Virtual video visits are available for all existing patients, but we prefer to see you in person for the first office visit.

Dr. Velma Scantlebury
Dr. Velma Scantlebury
Dr. Velma Scantlebury is the first female African American Transplant Surgeon in the United States. She recently retired from ChristianaCare Kidney Transplant Program, where she served as the Director of Outpatient Clinics and Associate Director of the transplant program. Before moving to Delaware in 2008, Dr. Scantlebury served as the Chief of Transplantation, and Associate Dean for Community Education at the University of South Alabama.

She was recently honored by the Delaware Historical Society in 2021 for her outstanding contributions and has been named “Best Doctors in America” and “Top Doctor” in Philadelphia Magazine multiple times. Dr. Scantlebury serves on the National Kidney Foundation’s Health Equity Advisory Committee and the American Kidney Fund’s Health Equity Coalition.

With over 30 years of caring for patients who chronic diseases, Dr. Scantlebury’s passion for community education and disease prevention is born out by her continued advocacy for patient education, disease prevention, and equitable healthcare treatment.

Dr. Joan Coker
Dr. Joan Coker
Dr. Joan Coker is an Otolaryngologist Head and Neck Surgeon with ENT and Allergy of Delaware. She also specializes in the management of obstructive sleep apnea. After completing her training in California, Dr. Coker practiced in Illinois before returning to Delaware in 2007, starting her practice as the first Black Otolaryngologist in Delaware. In 2012, she joined ENT and Allergy of Delaware, and has been in practice for over 20 years.

Dr. Coker was recently awarded the Congressional Black Caucus Co-Chair award at the recent 50th Anniversary celebration. The Delaware News Journal named Dr. Coker one of the Most Influential Persons of 2022 in Delaware.

She is a member of the Trustee Board at the University of Delaware, and President of the Wilmington (DE) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. She
recently stepped down after 10 years serving as Board Chair at Kuumba Academy Charter School in Wilmington, DE.

Dr. Cydney Teal
Dr. Cydney Teal
Dr. Teal holds dual board certifications in Internal Medicine and Family Medicine and has been practicing for over 20 years. She most recently served as Primary Care Community Medicine Service Line Leader and Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at ChristianaCare, where she was responsible for clinical oversight of 25 clinical practices in DE, MD, NJ, PA, and the Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine/Family Medicine residency programs. Dr. Teal completed her Residency at Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation and received her graduate and undergraduate degrees from the Medical College of Virginia School of Medicine and the University of Virginia, respectively. In addition, she will be completing her MBA this summer 2022 from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
